Prosocial Behavior Is a Relative Strength in Siblings of Children with Physical Disabilities or Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract Research on siblings of children with developmental and physical disabilities has emphasized negative influences siblings’ mental health. Yet, such may be more prosocial compared without disabilities, due to care responsibilities their experiences brother’s or sister’s disability. We behavior between autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 47), ( 42), 44) using a multi-informant approach (i.e., child-, mother-, father-report). Prosocial was measured the Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire. Drawing theoretical empirical sibling literature, we also examined whether internalizing externalizing difficulties, adjustment situation, communication parents correlated behavior. Child-reported difficulties mother–child significantly mother-reported father-reported No significant correlates child-reported identified. When adjusting for communication, scored higher than mother- Siblings ASD conclude that relative strength in influenced by type disability, health, family communication.
